In a Cowboy or Texas Defender with a 3 inch barrel would 410 2 1/2 inch shells #6 shot be ok for snakes or SD

I personally would not use that for SD, but I can't speak as to how it would work on snakes.

Honestly? Out of a .410 with a microscopic barrel? I would hesitate even going to those.
In working on more than a couple hundred handgun shooting cases, I've seen that the two things that seem to be necessary to guarantee a stop to aggression are 1) shot placement and 2) adequate penetration. Based on the chrono data and pellet weight I've seen from these short-barreled .410s, I'd be profoundly concerned that - even if the shot placement were good - the pellets would not penetrate enough to get to the targeted vitals.
Now, every shooting is different - some people stop sometimes regardless of how they're hit. But I feel like my defensive rounds should be such that I'm certain I can target them successfully into the brain/spinal column (very rarely hit)/heart/aorta of an attacker.

I would think you're better off with the .357 for self-defense from a 4.25" barrel - and you can still use the CCI shot capsules for snakes, if you'd like.

Yes it sure is I have the 45acp 3"barrel and love it and if they ever offer the 4.25 barrel in 45 acp I will order one in a heart beat. A friend of mine has a ruger vaquero with a 3.75 barrel and he killed a black bear with it this fall it was a head shot and it only took one shot to put the bear down. I am not sure if he was using a hot reload or factory ammo but what ever it was it sure did the job.

I've got one of those .45 ACP birdshead New Vaqueros with the short tube - great gun. I frequently carry it while hiking up Bear Canyon behind my house.

I like the stocks on your Ruger - I've been really wanting to have Bill Peterson make me up a set of elk stags for mine, but his rates have gone through the roof since I last ordered from him, and I'll have to mull it over for a while first. The Ruger birdshead grip frame really suits my hand. I had a Cimarron/Uberti dual cylinder .45 Colt/ACP, but eventually traded it off because I didn't want to only carry five rounds and because its previous owner had tricked-out the trigger so as to make it dangerously light.

Thanks Eric I am not real happy with the grips on my Ruger I thought they would be darker than they are. I would love a set of the stag grips also but the are so expensive anymore if you run across any on-line that are a reasonable price let me know. That is really a good picture of your Cimarron. I like the shape of the Cimirron grips better than I do the Ruger and I do hope to own me a Cimarron before long I amlost bought one this past summer but it was a 357 mag and I am holding out for a 45 LC or acp. That sure is a mean looking knife pictured with you gun did you make that yourself ?

Thanks, that's a Matt Lesniewski knife. He has great stuff, complete with stag scales for a whole lot less than just a pair of Ruger elk stag stocks, too. www.mlknives.com/
