I have used a shotgun in years past for deer hunting, But have taken a keen interest in black powder muzzle loaders. Does anyone on this forum have any suggestions for affordable, accurate muzzle loader that have worked well for your needs? I am hopefully going to be in the market this summer to use it this fall.

I am no expert on muzzle loaders, but I have long been interested in the Thompson/Center Scout carbine and pistol (available in .45 - rare, .50 and .54) due to their tremendous power. They are no longer made, though, but can be easily and inexpensively found on GunBroker (I paid $90 for my .54 Scout pistol and $110 for my .54 Scout carbine). An early and very simple in-line system with a remarkably good trigger, the Scouts use #11 caps, not the more reliable 209 primers. One-hole groups at 50 yards and easy to ring the 210-yard gong hard with the one-ounce slugs pushed by 110 gr of powder. (435-gr bullets do 1253 painful fps from the pistol when pushed by 100 gr powder.)

Thanks for the post and epics. I have been looking at newer Thompson centers like the impact. But a used rifle is probably not a bad way to go. Seeing how it will be my first hunt this fall with a muzzle loader. I probably shouldnt drop a ton of cash up front incase I don't like the way the rifle ends up working for me. I will have to look on gunbroker and see what I can find. Thanks

Good luck to you - there is no better value than a lightly used muzzleloader - and now is a pretty good time to buy! You might haunt the sports sections of your local Wal-Marts - they blow out their muzzleloading gear for pennies on the dollar during the winter. It's kinda late, but you might catch something. Lord knows that sort of thing is probably immune to the insipid panic-buying that's been going on.

I used to hunt with a Kentucky flintlock reproduction. I was able to bag a few bucks with it in my day. That was with iron sights too. Muzzle loading is a great past time. It puts a little extra excitement onto a deer hunt. I haven't gone in years and haven't kept track of the market. Don't go to walmart support a local business or search a gunshow. You might pay more but you should be happier.
