Just thought I'd drop in and post a picture of the only derringer I've had, the Leinad Model "D" .410 derringer. It is the most painful pistol I've ever fired but it served me pretty well. I wore out the hammer assembly basically by playing with the gun and had to work on it a bit. Works fine again now but I gave it to my grandad for snake duty since I live in the suburbs.

That is a lovely piece. Very utilitarian. Now is that one made from a kit that was built, or was it one that was assembled when you got it? I have been very tempted to build one of the kits. They are relatively cheap for the parts to.

I highly recommended buying and building one of these kits, great little gun and you can't beat the price.

They are quite bizarre. Are they relatively durable? Accuracy? I bet its great for snakes probably a lot of fun

Admin: I bought mine already assembled. They're still in the $100 range when I see them new around here. They're very simple though and I think that it'd be a piece of cake to fabricate the parts to create one.
Graytr: Accuracy is poor. Past 10 feet the spread is so extreme that I doubt you'd hit anything with it. They're definitely good for up close snake/pest work though. Durability seems good. I had to work on the hammer assembly because I played with it until it was worn out, dry firing several thousand times. I've learned my lesson.
These are great guns to have but use as a backup or carry for pest control. Definitely not something that you'll want to shoot often because of the brutal recoil but they're a lot of fun for occasional use.
If you can find one for $100 I think you'll be happy.

I will have to keep my eye out for one, I have never really looked at any of the gun shows i have ever been too. Hopefully i can find one and not get reamed by a dealer. Prices have been so high on stuff at the shows.

Thanks for the fascinating report and pic. I've been tempted for a long time to do a build, just because. Would you please comment on how annoying you find the safety to be? This is the one area of complaint that I continually see come up, but I am interested in the opinion of someone who has given it a positive review otherwise.

The safety isn't that bad. There's a trick to it. Slightly pull the hammer back and the safety flicks right off. Same goes for when you engage it. Engaging it is actually the trickier of the two IMO.
Reloading takes a second because like most derringers you have to activate the safety but lets face it though, nobody is using these things for their ability to quickly reload. They're using them for snake or last ditch defensive duty.
